Tiny Tale: The Place Beside You

The youngling had outgrown its first sleeping basket. When it curled inside, its tail spilled over the rim and one wing rested awkwardly against the handle.

Its companion spent an afternoon making a larger bed, lining it with soft cloth before placing it in a sheltered corner. The dragon inspected every fold, climbed inside, and seemed quite satisfied.

By evening, it had dragged the bedding halfway across the room.

“You have room for both wings now,” its companion said, watching it tug the cloth toward his chair. “I thought you’d be pleased.”

The youngling paused with a mouthful of fabric. Then it stepped over the trailing corner and rested its chin on his knee, exactly as it had when its whole body could fit in his palm.

He set his book aside and stroked the warm ridge between its wings.

“Oh,” he murmured. “I moved you too far away.”

He brought the larger bed beside his chair. The dragon circled once, stretched comfortably into its new space, and laid its chin beneath his waiting hand.

Its tail still hung over the edge, but this time it was by choice.
